Grandmas Bible

When my grandma passed away, the Pastor stood at the front of the Funeral Home and told us what he knew about my grandma, not by what family and friends had told him, but by the contents of my grandmas Bible.

Inside that Bible was a poem my sister wrote almost 30 years ago when my Grandpa died. My grandma kept it tucked between the pages. There was a newspaper clipping of me when I was 5 in my kindergarten class. I’m now 41. There were pictures and notes and many many highlighted and underlined versus, because my grandma loved her Bible time. A year ago she passed away at 96 and it really sunk in how much her faith had been the shield that covered our family.

The Pastor said it was apparent that my grandma loved the Lord and she loved her family. She took us to the Lord and left us there, tucked inside those pages, she left us safely with the Lord. I know her prayers worked because I see the fruits in the family she so lovingly covered in the blood of Jesus for the past 70 years. My grandmas faith was big. I want faith like my grandmas.

She was the mother of 10 children and dozens and dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never had a job outside the home and she never drove a car. At only 5′ tall she was a force the devil didn’t mess with. She never buried a child or grandchild. She saw my uncle David healed by faith of spinal meningitis amongst other miracles. She was a testimony to what walking in the Spirit is about.

Every morning I get up, make a pot of coffee, and have my Bible time…just like grandma did. First, I pray for the Holy Spirit to discern the Word and to let it edify and feed me. Then I spend between 30 minutes and 3 hours lost in Gods Word. My Bible time in the past year has become so much more to me than it once was. I think in her passing I realized how important it is to start my day seeking Gods will for my day. Seeking Gods instruction for my life. Seeking Gods protection for my family and my friends. My Bible time IS my favorite time of day. I protect it as the most important “to do” of my day.

What could be more important than meeting with the Creator of All Creation to thank Him for a brand new day and a good cup of coffee. Prayer is you talking to God and his Word is him talking back to you. Oh how I treasure that Bible time. And I love that my children witness my devotion to the Lord. Discipleship starts at home! It starts by example!

Thanksgiving To God For His Enduring Mercy
Psalms 136:1-26 NKJV

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the God of gods!
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords!
For His mercy endures forever:
To Him who alone does great wonders,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who by wisdom made the heavens,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who laid out the earth above the waters,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who made great lights,
For His mercy endures forever—
The sun to rule by day,
For His mercy endures forever;
The moon and stars to rule by night,
For His mercy endures forever.
To Him who struck Egypt in their firstborn,
For His mercy endures forever;
And brought out Israel from among them,
For His mercy endures forever;
With a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,
For His mercy endures forever;
And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His mercy endures forever;
But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
For His mercy endures forever;
To Him who struck down great kings,
For His mercy endures forever;
And slew famous kings,
For His mercy endures forever—
Sihon king of the Amorites,
For His mercy endures forever;
And Og king of Bashan,
For His mercy endures forever—
And gave their land as a heritage,
For His mercy endures forever;
A heritage to Israel His servant,
For His mercy endures forever.
Who remembered us in our lowly state,
For His mercy endures forever;
And rescued us from our enemies,
For His mercy endures forever;
Who gives food to all flesh,
For His mercy endures forever.
Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures forever.”

  1. Really love this, especially how you are passing on the legacy. My grandmother wasn’t always a vocal believer, but I have her bible, and the few clippings and notes she tucked between the pages encouraged me to know that she turned to the Lord often.

    1. Mine was quiet as well…she just took all cares to the Lord. Thank God for Gandmas that pray and love their families how blessed we are for them!

  2. Indeed our God is the God of gods. None can be compared to him. Your grandma is a perfect reflection of God’s love and what it means to walk with and in the Lord. I’m sure she is still walking with the Lord in his Bossom right now. More grace and may we continually dwell in the presence of the Lord. Thank you very much for sharing with us all. God bless you.

    1. Thank you for your always kind words. You and I are the future grandmas who are leading the way…if I can be half the woman she was in faith…I’ll be BLESSED 🙏🏻

      1. Yes you can. We are the sons and daughters of a God that calleth those things that be not as though they are. So speak it forth and live it through. You are already blessed….just look around and see every tiny piece in front of you. You are what you say and think you are. So, who are you?
